OCR: The animal that is most closely associated with the desert landscape is probably the lizard, sunning itself on a rock or scampering across the desert sand. A wide variety of lizards live in the world's deserts, from the tiniest species that may be less than 3 inches long up to the Gila monster of the American southwest which can reach two feet in length. Most desert lizards are diurnal - they are active during the day and rest at night. This allows them to heat up their bodies using the sun's rays during the morning hours.
